The Pomeranian
derived its name from a German providence Pomerania. Considered the smallest of
the Spitz family the Pomeranian was once
a larger 35 pound dog. Formerly a
sled dog then a sheep herder this fluffy dog caught the eye of the ladies of
England.
The royal courts in Europe wanting a smaller pooch was the reason
this breed was sized down to a toy dog between 3 to 7 pounds. Spitz type dogs
from Germany, Italy along with the Maltese were added to enhance ,and size down
this new breed. The first show Pomeranians were white and later a Black was
introduced. This breed has been recorded from its origin in many different
color's and patterns. At one point the larger versions had a tendency to be quit
nippy and aggressive . A larger white type was banned from show acceptance in NY
believing they were more prone to rabies. It was reported a white pom caused 75%
of rabies infections to humans in NY in the 1880's. This type was later to be
assumed to be the foundation for the American spitz otherwise known as the
American Eskimo.
The smaller toy size was desired more for its sweet and
charming personality. This was the choice of the ladies, so became the choice to
form this wonderful little breed. Today’s Pomeranian is a fluffy little wind up
toy. With an infectious clownish personality that can steal your heart away. Its
coat is similar to its artic sled cousins, They will have a shed twice a year
during season change. This breed requires a loving and caring master. They are
ideal for Apartment life. They are good around well behaved children if
socialized with them properly. Owning a Pomeranian is akin to having a canine
comedian always there to make you smile, or laugh. A Pomeranian can almost
appear to smile itself, with their sparkly eyes and laughing tongue. This breed
can be allergenic to those with allergies so before considering a Pomeranian ask
for a hair sample to see if you will have any reactions.
