Should I breed my Dog?

Should you breed your Female or Male dog?

Even if you are attempting to produce even one litter of puppies. All people wanting to breed a litter of puppies should be required to be licensed and inspected. It may be through the USDA or an individuals state agricultural department. All breeders should be required to have an attending Veterinarian who inspects their facilities. All breeders should attend continuing educations seminars.
Breeding dogs is not for the novice. It is not something a person can become skilled at by reading an article or even by breeding one litter every 3 years . Every birth is different a breeder must have skills of a veterinarian technician. There are so many things that can go wrong. Licensing every breeder who wishes to produce a litter of puppies would greatly diminish those who misrepresent the canine breeding industry. Even with the medical knowledge Veterinarians hold today. The studies for stress related illnesses in Puppies are still not properly studied. This is due to the lack of professionalism in an industry that is filled with too many Chiefs and not enough Indians. Every breeder has their opinion no matter if it is right or wrong. Information is constantly passed on as fact that can be dangerous to animals and humans.

Breeding and Whelping the puppies is only part of the problem. From there on to the time they go to their new home There are many bad things that can happen which can and will cause death. A breeder must know a proper vaccine program and worming program. A breeder must know the proper way to feed the mother dog. Eclampsia in a mother dog is frightening and kills very fast.

Socializing the puppies, marketing the puppies. These are not easy task. Finding the proper homes.  Licensing all Breeders even Beginners raising one litter will generate money for more educational programs. Pay the wages to hire more inspectors . Level the playing field so back biting and lying to customers to save a sale will not confuse the public. The public will also have recourse if the breeder is not following the rules. Licensing should also be required for all shelters and rescues. The public deserves a happy experience.

What can happen to my female dog if I breed her?

First off breeding your female dog does not ensure she will have a litter of puppies. Dogs have miscarriages just like humans . Stress, Genetics, the wrong diet, venereal disease. Yes dogs can get VD a disease called brucellosis. This disease can even be transmitted to humans and cause miscarriages in humans . A dog can carry this disease and you will not know it.

A mother dog also can get an infection which can cause a condition called Pyrometria . This condition can be either open or closed. Open is not as dangerous. You will see puss excreted from her vulva. But, your dog may never be able to produce puppies again. Closed Pyrometria is extremely dangerous It can fill your dogs uterus

up with puss which will cause it to rupture. If the dogs uterus

ruptures and she is not given and emergency hysterectomy. Your dog will bleed to death inside and die. This can also happen to a female dog that is not bred shortly after having her heat cycle ( period) So it is best to spay your female pet dog to avoid this dangerous condition.

A mother dog when it comes to whelping( giving birth) She can have uterine inertia which is extremely common. This causes a puppy to slow down or get stuck. A mother trying and trying to give birth can run out of energy loose enough calcium and die of eclampsia. Or she may require an emergency C section. Puppies born under these conditions can easily die. The mother dog can die on her own vomit if she ate before she had her surgery. This surgery in bigger cities can start at $2,000 dollars. With no guarantee you will have a living mother dog or living puppies. Puppies born dead or inhaled to much fluid. What will you do when they are born appearing dead? Do you know how to save them? Or do you just let them die? What of a puppy born. It is still in the sac. The mother dog just sits there and ignores the drowning puppy. The misconception that all dogs know what to do is a dangerous assumption. There are also cases of mother dogs chewing off the cord and biting off a leg with the cord. In smaller breeds those legs are sooo tiny.

Mama Dog had Puppies and Everything is fine?

The hard part is over. You may have lost one or two. Or maybe you have some skill and or luck , and they all lived.

Now mama is getting nervous. She starts to pick up the puppies with her mouth wanting to move them. The puppies are screaming. She gets nervous and bites down too hard. One puppy dead. . Do you know the signs of a mother who needs to be watched? Do you attempt to take them from the mother denying them of the much needed colostrum ( mothers first milk)? Do you have an extra mother dog wet nurse? That you can put the new born orphan puppies on? If you breed one litter every so often you do not.

You get lucky your dog is as sweet as pie. But then you notice she is laying on a puppy. She is not moving. The puppy is screaming. She is killing it while she looks at you and wags her tail. Or she wants to dig and dig she keeps burying some of the puppies in the bedding suffocating one.

Then you notice mama is getting skinny. She is not eating. She is such a good mother. It appears you did not have her flushed out. She has a dead puppy or a placenta still inside her. Her fever has risen so high. Her milk has gone sour and the puppies are starting to die. And soon the mother dies too.

Now the puppies are a few weeks old. The mother has settled in. Your child brings home a friend. Who wants to play with your new puppies. Or it can be an adult. Everyone wants to play and touch little puppies. What you did not know they have dogs too. Their dog is sick. Two weeks later your entire litter dies of parvo.

Your litter lives or part of them does. You are weary and promise yourself you will never do this again. Now they are getting close to be sold. Mama does not want to feed them anymore or clean up after them. You are. They are so cute but they go every where. You put an ad in the paper. Weird people answer your ad. People you would not normally allow in your home. They come in with kids running around almost stepping on your puppies. One kid drops a puppy on its head and it cry's on and on. What you did not know. The family was at the local shelter before they came to your house. They played with every puppy in there. But they did not find the one they wanted. You sell the litter. 1 week later you get a call from a screaming person yelling their puppy died and the vet bill was four thousand dollars and they are taking you to court because you sold them a sick puppy. It was Campylobacter and it came in on the shoes and clothing of the family that played petting zoo with your puppies. But refused to buy one because they said they were too expensive. All the sudden the phone rings again. It is another puppy buyer. What do you do??

These are just some of the negatives. There are thousands of scenarios in part and even in combination. You may ask why be a breeder. Well, if you are skilled you rarely have these problems and can see the signs to prevent them. Breeding also involves knowing about genetics. Even the most skilled breeder will loose a few puppies. Breeding also involves homing the puppies. Some people do not have the personality to sell and sending a litter to a shelter is just wrong. Those facilities are not set up for the health of a puppy. Many breeders are against mandatory licensing of all breeders. Some breeders feel for some reason or another that they should be exempt and free to do as they please. Well if this were a perfect world sure why not. But we all know regulation is necessary . Your hair stylist has to be licensed, and required to have some level of education. Your hair grows back. A Puppy, nope, they turn to dust.

What about breeding my male dog?

So, you have the manliest male dog around.
He is drop dead gorgeous.
A pillar of health and maleness.

If you have a family? Then having an intact male dog can cause serious problems. Like male breeding aggression . Breeding a male dog, and then neutering him, will not stop your male dog from knowing what he did.
This can cause him to wonder, and possibly get hit by a car. If he smells a bitch in heat.

Then you have male on male dog fighting which can be dangerious for humans, and the dogs themselves.
Breeding a male dog can turn them into leg lifters. They will want to mark their territory. I have had a male dog mark me at a dog show to keep all the other dogs away from me. It was disgusting. Having my leg peed on but that is the nature of the beast.

For a better pet male dog, neuter him. Breeding should be for professionals. Neutering your dog will not make him any less male. It will only make him a better pet. Also, your male dog can catch a VD (brucellosis) from a infected female. Which is a worse ailment for the male, More so then the female. It can cause swollen testicles, Skin problems. and blindness.
