How to use chart.
This chart only works on healthy puppies.  There are exactly 16 ounces to a pound. 2 pounds is 32 pounces.

So to stay in the teacup range a puppy should be born from 2 and a half ounces to no bigger then 6 and a half ounces, at birth. Why such a wide range. Well This chart is for a perfect healthy puppy. We all know nature is far from perfect. Puppies can be born premature, thin, over weight. Everything is taken into account. If the puppy is too fat then the chart will estimate the weight larger then the puppy will grow. Same as if the puppy is too thin or premature. I know of a premature puppy born. Not one of my litters a friends litter. The puppy was barely 3 ounces at birth. The Puppy matured way off this birth scale well past reasonable teacup size.

I have also used this chart on fat puppies. I estimated their weights at 5 to 6 pounds( you always give or take a pound) and the puppies matured to 3 to 4 pounds. Because they were fat and weaned later. I personally always wean late myself. I feel the puppies should stay with mama for as long as she will have them. And the longer the better.

So a good way to tell you are dealing with a real teacup is to see the weights through his/her entire growth from puppy until adult, by using this scale. Feel free to come back to this page to estimate your litter or a puppy you now own.

Around weaning time the puppy may loose weight or not gain weight for a few weeks. This is normal. The milk is very fattening and some puppies wean better then others.

No matter where you have purchased your Teacup This chart is very important for you to estimate mature weight.

Another thing to be taken into consideration. Early spaying and neutering can add size to an animal. This is not said to deter people from spaying and neutering. For we believe this is best for most all pet dogs. But it is a medical truth that spayed and neutered dogs will grow longer then dogs that are intact. This said you should discuss with the person you purchased your puppy from, and your veterinarian, about what is best for your puppy.
